Tell
Senate Committee that California Needs Big Solutions on Chemicals
Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, August, 2008
In our quest to eliminate the environmental causes of breast cancer,
the Breast Cancer Fund has focused first on our most vulnerable
populations, especially children. Last year, we prioritized getting
toxic phthalates out of kids' toys in California—and now federal
lawmakers are following suit.
But we know that there are many more chemicals in many more types of
products, and banning one toxic chemical at a time, while important,
isn't a long-term solution. Today, we're trying to address these
problems to protect the health of Californians and our environment for
years to come.
We need your help now to keep these efforts alive.
Two bills currently moving in Sacramento take a comprehensive approach
to harmful chemicals in consumer products:
• AB 1879, authored by Assemblymember Mike Feuer and sponsored by the
Breast Cancer Fund, would allow the state to regulate toxic chemicals in
all consumer products, not just in the few products it can
regulate now.
• AB 558, also authored by Assemblymember Feuer, would establish a
public database to allow consumers and businesses to compare the hazards
of different chemicals.
Long-term, these environmental health programs will save the state
money by ensuring that toxic chemicals don’t end up in our bodies or our
environment. But in our current budget crunch, the Senate Appropriations
Committee may not approve the bills because they require minor funding.
The committee members need to hear from you to know that these programs
are investments worth making!
